Effective patient education is essential for successful patient outcomes. New media has been utilized to improve medical literacy and communication but also presents challenges to patient centered care. Healthcare professionals must use creative solutions to overcome these challenges by gaging their patient’s knowledge base and disseminating customized and appropriate resources and information.
Healthcare education varies greatly depending on the population. Physicians must be well versed in their specialty down to the most minute details. On the other hand, patient centered care relies on translation of complex medical topics, which is often achieved through comprehensive visual aids.
Effective communication and consideration of health literacy is essential for effective patient centered care. Physicians are tasked with translating complex medical content to a level of knowledge most appropriate for each individual patient. The addition of thoughtfully designed visual aids to patient education material can drastically improve comprehension and health literacy.
Patient education constantly evolves and adapts to changes in knowledge and technology. In order to achieve patient centered care, Physicians must tailor education material to each patient’s needs. Thoughtfully developed Visual aids have the potential to bridge the gap in health literacy by comprehensively communicating multiple layers of information in a rapid amount of time.
