Pathophysiology
When the glomerular basement membrane is damaged, there is an increase in permeability that initially allows proteins of small molecular weight to leak out through the Bowman's capsule and proximal tubule. As the condition worsens, also the leak out and are excreted in urine.
The continues to lose proteins and serum albumin is decreased resulting in a decrease in osmotic pressure.
Generalised oedema occures due to low osmotic pressure.
The disease progress to renal failure due to persistent hypovolaemia and accelerated atherosclerosis as a result of hyperlipidaemia.
