disorders of the penis
phimosis
occurs when a prepuce is constricted over the glans, making retraction difficult or impossible.
pathophysiology
the prepuce goes into a spasm and constricts over the glans. the constricted prepuce is not retractable, and as such the area under it can not be cleaned leading to accumulation of smegma and later infection
-
paraphimosis
occurs when a tight foreskin, once retracted can not be returned to its normal position.
pathophysiology
failure to return foreskin to its normal position results in impeded circulation, which causes the glans to swell rapidly.
-
erectile dysfunction
pathophysiology
inability of the brain to respond to sexual stimuli can interrupt the signals to the parasympathetic nervous system that release impulses that causes the small arteries of the penis to dilate
management
support should be provided for anxiety. adrenergic blocking medication that may cause vasodilatation in the corpora cavernosa may be ordered
inability to achieve or maintain an erection of the penis that allows satisfactory sexual performance
