hydrocele

definition

is a non tender fluid filled mass in the tunica vaginalis of the scrotum.

pathophysiology

it is a painless accumulation of clear yellow fluid in the scrotal sac.

it is a manifestation of a developmental defect,

the peritoneal sleeve, which leads the testes in their descent from abdominal cavity into the pelvic cavity to final form the tunica vaginalis, was not obliterated between the deep inguinal ring and the upper pole of the scrotum, thus forming a link between the abdominal peritoneal compartment. a hydrocele can conceal a testicular tumour or inguinal hernia.
