Tools
Sanding Materials
The sanding tools are things like sand paper and the belt and rotor sander. These can be used to smooth out our wooden bases and are not too difficult to use.
Saw
The saw is a very basic tool. It has a handle and a sharp blade that is normally used to cut through woods
Laser Cutter
The laser cutter is a tool that I am fairly familiar with by now. It uses a very precise laser and a mechanical belt to cut out shapes that you give it in acrylic or cardboard.
Soldering Iron
The soldering iron is essentially a long metal stick that heats up. The heat is then used to melt whats called the solder which is what connects two metal parts.
Computer
Our computers will be used in this project to design our products and to send them off to things like the laser cutter for printing. We will also use the computer and the internet to research the topic.
Acrylic Glue
Acrylic glue is a fairly simple item. It is just a special glue that can help to bond our acrylic parts together. We might use this if we need to fix something or if we printed our acrylic in two different parts.
Skills
Soldering
I have never done soldering before and will have to learn. From my research I know that soldering is the joining of two pieces of metal in order to be able to run a current of electricity through them.
Coding in C Sharp
I have never coded in c sharp and so I will have to learn this. I know from some research that c sharp is a very common, multi-use language that is developed by Microsoft.
Woodwork
For our design we will be making a wooden base with some simple techniques, I have done a good amount of wood work before so I should be fine with these things like sanding and cutting.
Acrylic Work
I have done a lot of acrylic work in the past and should be fairly capable with this. I know how to use acrylic glue and the strip heater to bend it, as well as how to colour it for cutting in the laser cutter.
Illustrator
In this unit we will be using illustrator to design our products. I already know quite a bit about illustrator so this is not a concern for me. I have also done laser cutting units with acrylic in the past.
Criteria
Function
This refers to how the product works. The light stand needs to actually turn on and off (the LED strip) through the use of the appropriate coding.
Safety
It is important for the light stand to be safe to use, especially because it has a power source. I also need to consider factors such as the sharp edges of the acrylic and timber.
Quality
This refers to the strength of the materials used for the product, as well as the quality of skills and techniques used to make the light stand. I need to be using the tools appropriately in order to get a good finish on my final project.
Aesthetics
This refers to what the product looks like. The light stand would need to be aesthetically pleasing (or appealing to the eye) and suit the environment that it will be decorated in.
Materials
Wood
Wood is a fairly simple material that most people are very familiar with as it is used in almost everything. It can be cut easily depending on the type and is a solid material for a base.
Acrylic
This material is a type of polyacrylate plastic that is fairly durable, can be easily bent and is used for many projects that need an all purpose plastic material. Especially for this unit light passes through it well.
Circuits
In this unit I will have to learn about circuits, I know that it is the path that electricity travels on. All circuits need three main components, these are the source, conductor and the resistor.
