language is stictly controlled by the state, women are not tuaght to read or write, books are limited (including the bible), allows for censorship of ideas as there is no way for people to prove the government - bible messages can be manipulated to suit ones own purpose

society is segregated as a means of safety, people do not try to form relationships with one another as any one could be a spy for the government, allow the government to remain in control because people don't talk to each other and cannot form groups/ideas against the current regime stay alone stay safe, form relationships, stay sane
