The UN
there are 5 permanent members of security council: the UK, France, Russia, China, and the US
-
Kofi Annan said 'More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can mast it only if we face it together'
founded in 1945, the UN's role in the world is to:
-maintain peace
-embed human rights
-uphold respect fro international law
-provide a forum for discussion and debate
it was the worlds first truly global organisation
-
countries also provide troops to the UN upon request, in order that they can be sent to keep the peace
then UN's army is not a fighting force - they will not take a side, or go on the offensive
there are then 10 other nations who sit on the council for 2 years stints (a regional balance is maintained)

General Assembly is the place where all issues can be brought, and the main body responsible fro upholding the UN's four main principles
Is The UN Effective
Failures
in 1994 the UN were sup[posed to provide assistance for the impending Rwandan genocide, but they failed to do so and it cost nearly a million lives
some of the peacekeepers were accused of prostituting women and young girls and in some cases, raping them in the rep of congo in 2005
the UN used Iraqs lack of food as a way to exploit them for money by persuading them to sell oil through them and some of the members allow this money to fall into their pockets and not into providing Iraq with food goods
the UN were blamed for causing an outbreak of cholera in Nepali following an earthquake in 2010. in a law suit they claimed immunity
an even bigger mistake following the genocide in Rwanda was the death of 8000 Bosnian Muslims in a small town that was pronounced a safer zone.

Successes
they have had a huge effect on the amount of people dying in conflict as part of their conflict resolution and peacekeeping initiatives.
they have provided justice in many cases but the most commendable would be the prosecutions of 2 leaders who had committed war crimes
they have also intervened with countries struggling with life threatening famine by sending large food boxes with other agricultural supplies
the UN has also been able to persuade some countries to give up weapons like guns and some have even ended their nuclear arms and research programmes to help contribute to world peace
they have also helped protect places like the Galapagos islands in order to allow tourism and the local economy to run in sync with their conservation act. there are hundreds more protected sites
if the UN wasn't in existence none of these acts of peace and justice would've taken place at all where as some of these negative acts would still have occurred but some of the acts like the oil scandal wouldn't have occurred if they weren't greedy
in my opinion, the UN is one of the best organisations that has ever come about as they have have such a great and wide positive affect on the world
