Specifically, when individuals see the gulf between their level of certain ability and the target's, they avoid making comparisons at all

People with the purpose of self-evaluation tend to choose people who share similarities with them, especially some distinctive characteristics
They use the target as a somekind of benchmark of how well they perform in the area of comparison to improve them in this area
