Using my previous experience in product design and my interest in aiding others the goal of my project would be to design and create a scaled-down prototype of a short-term,‘flat-pack’, lightweight and portable shelter for two children orphaned after a (natural or man-made) disaster.

Designing the shelter:
What materials are suitable (cheap, lightweight, waterproof, environmental)?
How can I assemble the shelters (glue, tape, screws/nails, clip-together?) and fix the shelters at the scene (pegs, ropes?)
How big should each shelter be, bearing in mind a) the space needed for two people and b) the ‘flat packs’ need to fit into standard aircraft pallets/containers?
Can I design a shelter that can later be re-used (maybe disassembled and used for fencing in rural areas, or just broken up and used as fuel for cooking or heating in winter)?
Can I design a shelter that needs a minimum of ground preparation at the scene (making the ground level, clearing plants and rocks etc.)
How should the shelters be packed so they take up the least space and are most easily transported to the disaster area and unpacked there?
