Neurology - Dopaminergic Pathways
*Dopaminergic Pathways
4 pathways
Notes
:
note that most Doapmine producing neurons are in the midbrain = meso, rest are in the hypothal = tubero
midbrain = meso DA neurons
--> VTA and substantia nigra
hypothal DA neurons = tubero
-->
*Tuberinfundibular Dopaminergic Pathway
nucleus accumbans (hypothalamus) --> anterior pituitary gland
dopamine inhibitory pathway from the hypothalamus on prolactin release from the anterior pit
Antipsycotics --> prolactinemia
since you are stopping the 1/4 dopamine pathways that is meant for inhibiting prolactin release
--> hypothal control over the anterior PIT

*Mesolimbic Dopaminergic Pathway
VTA = ventral tegmental area (medial midbrain) --> nucleus accumbens (minor to amygdala)
*Nigrostriatal Dopaminergic Pathway
substantia nigra (midbrain) --> striatum (= caudate + putamen)
*Direct and Indirect pathway of PD
-
*Mesocortical Dopaminergic Pathway
VTA = ventral tegmental area (medial midbrain) --> frontal cortex
4 Dopamine Pathways
Tuberoinfundibular --> Prolactin DA Pathway
Infundibulum (= pituitary stalk of hypothalamus) --> anterior pituitary gland (causes release of prolactin)
MesoCortical DA Pathway
VTA = Ventral Tegmental Area (midbrain) --> Frontal cortex (mainly the prefrontal cortex)
MesoLimbic DA Pathway
VTA = Ventral Tegmental Area (midbrain) --> Nucleus Accumbens (also to other limbic structures)
--> remember
"V-TA DA-NA"
song makes DANA very positive, happy and hallucinate
Nigro-Striatum DA Pathway
substantia nigra (midbrain) --> striatum (caudate + Putamen)
--> remember striatum as mix of a STRAIGHT CAUTIOUS DATER + PutaMEN
--> Striatum = Caudate + Putamen
