Steps taken to Identify and Help Struggling Students
(Based on my school's policies)
First Indicators
• Changes in behavior
• Student doing badly on assignments
• Lack of interest in work/learning
• Getting off task
• Going to the toilet often during class
• Disrupting other students
• Talking to others during lessons
• Excessive absences
• Lack of confidence
• Changes in emotion
Initial Steps
• Talk to the student
• Go over content/re-teach
• Assign work you think they would like
• Use differentiation tactics/personal learning
• Let the child have a say in how they would like to be taught
• Monitor their work, attitude, and behavior to see if the changes are working
Talk with the Student's Coach
• Has the coach noticed anything?
• Find out if this is subject specific or school-wide
• Figure out a plan of what steps to take next
• Set short-term goals and long-term targets for the child
• Have the coach sit down with the student
• Decide if to get the principal involved at this stage
Talk with Principal
• Ask the principal for ideas/thoughts
• Ask to arrange meeting with parents
Meeting with Parents
• Have they noticing anything at home?
• Come up with a plan for school and home
• Coordinate together to further steps/actions to take
• Maybe arrange extra lessons for the child outside school hours
• Have homework parents could help child with
• Give parents lesson information beforehand so they can discuss new content with child before class
• Have set goals, objectives, and checkpoints
Have the Plans and Changes Helped?
• Has there been any improvement?
• Maybe some of the strategies worked and can be built upon
• How does the child feel about the changes and new approaches?
• Talk with the parents about how the student has been outside of school
