Special Education Tiers
Tier 1: Student in the general education classrooms. The student may benefit from differentiated instruction and/or a co-teacher in a GP course. (90% of students)
Tier 2: Student requires additional support outside the classroom. This may be achieved through one-on-one tutoring, for example. (5-10% of students)
Tier 3: Student requires additional support in the form of an IEP. Accommodations and modifications are provided for the student. The student may be out of the general education classrooms for most subjects and in an adaptive course instead. (1-5% of students)
Note: It is advised that students pass through each tier before being referred for testing for an IEP. Parents and teachers can request that students jump straight to tier 3 with a referral, however.
