Background and Family
-
Gemma is a 5th grade student who immigrated to the United States from Mexico when she was 6 years old.
Her parents want her to see her succeed academically, and be proficient in English while also maintaining conversational fluency in Spanish.
Continued ELL Support
Gema is able to comprehend the main idea of a reading selection, but struggles to know which supporting details are important.
Both Gema's classroom teacher and ELL teacher decide that to support her, her ELL teacher will help her to identify the details that support the main idea in classroom texts.
Her classroom teacher plans to build on Gema's interest in the newspaper to amplify her awareness on varying sentence patterns specific to different content areas.
School Environment
Gema has made a lot of close friends who encouraged her to join Student Council. Part of her duties involved making morning announcements. Gema was asked to do an announcement in Spanish and English which impressed her friends. Now her class has a Spanish word of the day that Gema teaches to her classmates!
Her favorite part of the week was when her class conducted science investigations, because she loves
hands-on activities and working in small groups. She also got to experiment with language she didn't normally use.
Gema is a thoughtful writer and she enjoys learning how to write in multiple genres, including
personal narratives, poetry, and creative writing.
Her most detailed stories are about her trips to Mexico to visit her family. In these stories, she uses a variety of sentence patterns to engage the reader.
She also enjoys working on the classroom newspaper and interviewing other teachers and students for the articles.
