TMJ
Modified Synovial joint
B/w 2 bony elements separated by articular space, fibrocartilaginous articular disc (separates condyle of mandible and mandibular fossa)
-
Joint capsule
-
Outer fibrous membrane: dense, irregular connective tissue, stabilise joint, thicken to form ligaments
-
Hinge + gliding
-
Hinge-like depression and elevation, condyles rotate
-
Where and what?
Joint b/w temporal bone and mandible, condyle of mandible rests w/i mandibula fossa of temporal bone
*mandibular fossa is not stress bearing bcos articular capsule surrounds TMJ, stress absorbed b/w condyle and articular disc and b/w disc & articular tubercle
Used for swallowing, phonation, mastication
Fn: allows large mvm, supports joint, richly innervated
Innervation
-
Sensory
-
also might experience referred pain, body cannot distinguish which part is experiencing pain
