The seven principles of American criminal law are "legality, actus reus, harm, causation, mens rea, concurrence, punishment. Furthermore, the "body of the crime" or " corpus delicti are actus reus, harm, causation, mens rea and concurrence.
Legality is defined as if there is no law there is no crime. This can be ambiguous through the interpretation of law. There also needs to be punishment for actions deemed as a "crime" by law.
The components of "the body of the crime" considers the act itself, if harm was intended, if there is proof of cause and the concurrence of those three factors. Intent (mens rea) must also be considered if the harm was intentional or not (premeditated or not)
