Endangered animals in NZ
Habitat loss
Mostly our birds
They are dying because of habitat loss
Natural disasters are one of the main reasons their homes are destroyed
Wild fires burn down the burrows that kiwis and other flightless birds live in. As well as the trees.
We cut down the trees that birds live in. How would you like it if you came home one day and your house was gone.
Floods wash out burrows and push over trees that are home to the birds. Some of the birds can not fly so they drown.
Birds get killed by new predators
The native birds get killed because they have no defense!
The reason they have no defense is because the just freeze which makes it easier for the predators to get them.
The new predators kill the prey of native predators. And then there is no more prey and they die! The Moa went extinct because humans killed them for meat and feathers. Then the Hasst eagle went extinct because it's food source went! So they starved to death! How awful!
Some people bring in animals from different places because they think that they can catch rabbits and things like that.
But they go after the birds, which is very bad and is one of the MAIN reasons why they are dying out.
Urban development
We have not been building towns that benefit the animals
We have been building more and more towns
Some of us don't care about how big we make our towns
We keep making our towns bigger
There habitats get destroyed
They have nowhere to live
Farming
The fertilizers that they use go into the water that the animals and birds drink out of
The animals get sick
They spread the sickness
Then many die
