What is Iambic Pentameter?
Iambic Pentameter is a line of verse with five metrical feet of stressed and then unstressed syllables. (Sounds like math..I know!)

Iambic Pentameter was Shakespeare's preferred method for writing because it was something he believed would stick better in people's heads, it was a very "rhyme-y" way of saying things.
How Do We Use Iambic Pentameter?
In what suits OUR class needs, we will be using Iambic Pentameter as a measurement to help us READ plays with ease.
as you may or may not know Plays were meant to be seen and not read, which i can make it tricky to read by oneself sometimes!
How Do We Read Play Structure?

What is the Best Way for us to Understand?
As we may or may not know, plays are not exactly read the same way books are. In order for us to have the best chance at understanding structure we must make sure we are very engaged with the work.
Looking at this image, the text to the left, is the original. Notice how even though Hamlet speaks for a while the sentence structure isn't what we are used to seeing.
Remember to always end the sentence where the punctuation marks state!

How can I understand what everyone is saying?
It is important to remember that Shakespeare's language is not that far away from our current one. It is okay to be confused, but for the most part there are only a few words from the 16th century that really changed.
Shakespeare's language is very similar to that of the Christian King James Version Bible. Though the words seem fancier, we have to remember that the aren't anything extreme, as Shakespeare's
plays were understandable to people who never even finished school!
