- - - - Allow student some "time away" to cool down. This allows the student to reset so they can rejoin the class when ready.
        
        In the "quiet space" the student can do calming activities such as this one (smell the flowers and blow out the candles)

    - - Explain to the student, in private, that they will be given a stress ball or fidget to use when feeling anxious, stressed, nervous, etc. Tell student that this will help them focus through feelings of anxiety and stress.
        
        Explain the appropriate and inappropriate use of the stress ball or fidget.
- - - - Data tracking system: Teacher will keep track of CICO dates & feedback on a spreadsheet. Students will be given a "goal chart" with a point system, (or smiley face/ frowny face) to record progress.
        
        Parents will be coached on how to review the feedback with their child in order to keep it positive.
        
        How this helps:
        -good communication with parents
        -positive interaction with student/ good rapport
        -holds student accountable
        -keeps a record of behavior
    - - Positive outcomes: The student will receive more individual attention and support tailored to their needs. The counselor will either do "push in" or "pull out" sessions with the student, meaning that the support will either happen in class or in a private session. This method is helpful because it frees up the teacher so they can get back to teaching the class. It also helps the student be in a more relaxed state, away from the tense situation.
    - - Create a list or outline steps in a procedure. For each step, write a simple sentence. For example, "Walk in the hall." Take a picture of the student performing each step & print out the book. We keep social stories in the student's cubby and ask them to read it when the student shows signs of anxiety.
        
        Why it works:
        This is a great strategy for early years students. The pictures are engaging, especially if they are in the photos!
