Andy - Defiant
Behaviors
Dislikes being told what to do - Student will resist doing anything asked of them unless he sees a direct benefit for himself
-
Engage in arguments and conflicts - Student will start a conflict over anything with anyone including teachers
Throws tantrums or has meltdowns - Will throw fits over anything to try to get control of situations
Projects blame on others - Even when student is in trouble for his actions he will attempt to minimize this by using everyone elses actions as a shield.
Unable to admit mistakes - Student believes himself infallible and will fight tooth and nail when confronted with errors
Tier 1
Give Choices - Giving student options will make him feel as though he has some control over his learning
-
Praise when cooperative and well behaved - Positive reinforcement with the desired behavior can create an internal motivator
Clear, consistent and predictable consequences - If the student knows the rules and the consequences than he is more aware of his behavior and less confrontational when faced with consequences
Tier 2
Daily Behavior Form - Student can see, on a day to day basis, their actions and create a greater sense of understanding and personal responsibility
-
-
Teach social skills and conflict resolution - Help the student learn healthier methods of dealing with the conflicts and problems they encounter
Tier 3
Behavior Contract - Have the student make and agree to a contract that dictates the acceptable and unacceptable behavior from the student
-
Behavior Intervention Plan- Give more direction on behavior modification and potentially include administration and parents
Teach social and conflict resolution skills - Work more with students to build these skills on a more frequent basis
Andy was a student with many problems with his behavior and his studying. He seemed very cemented with a fixed mentality. He saw himself as smart and therefore correct. This led to behavior problems not only with teachers but also with other students.
Data Tracking - My last school provided little if any assistance when it comes to managing or tracking student behavior. In my new school if there is no adequate method of tracking I'll likely use the daily positive behavior tracking form as it is simple to use and easy to understand. This will help teachers and students be aware of where they are at to work towards consistent improvement. This form also works well when I may only see my students once or twice a week.
