Seem lackluster, sluggish, emotionally flat

Express no concern about incomplete work, grades, achievement

Not care about classes, knowing subject matter, studying, tests, quizzes

Only work when teacher is hovering over them telling them what to do or pushing them

Have little facial or physical affect (often looks sad and unmoved by much)

Only come to school for social aspect

Have frequent absences or frequent reports of illness

Frequently skip classes or school

Fail to complete penalties

Have an “I don’t care” or “Whatever” attitude

Be hanging out with bad crowd

Tier 1

Strategy 1: Give more structured routine to allow students to remove any anxiety of nervous feelings around the day or to begin to be motivated if they know what is coming.

Strategy 2: Praise when on task gives students the positive reinforcement to feel accomplished when the teacher recognizes their effort that they have put in.

Strategy 3: Assign a buddy or partner for peer studies. This can realign their motivation to what their partners is.

Data Tracking systems

  1. Behaviour Tracking form, to allow for student to see successes
  2. School counselor referral form. To allow for the student to see the counselor and make a plan for why they are unmotivated.
  3. Learning Styles Profiles and Inventories

Tier Two

Strategy 1: Self Monitoring after the tier one strategies are implemented over a long term period the strategy of self monitoring would be effective to ensure the student was aware of the behaviour to try and prevent any further lack of motivation

Strategy 2: Organizational tools will help a student that is unmotivated because some road blocks to being intrinsically motivated comes from feeling organized and having everything you need to be successful

Strategy 3: Reward system to encourage the student to do well to get the rewards.

Tier Three

Strategy 1:Structured breaks can allow an unmotivated student the opportunity to celebrate their structured break time

Strategy 2: Sensory tools can be a great asset in providing the student that isn't motivated to have a variety of sensory tools to use to try and remain engaged and stimulated while in class.

Strategy 3:Teach Relationship skills to unmotivated students which tackles the issue holistically and creates opportunity to want to come to school and make friends with those that may be motivated to be there.
