Strategy 1: Card Flip Tracking Form. This form starting at Tier 1 can be used as a way to inform the student how they did for the day and what they could do differently. It is also a way to provide information to the parents how their child did that day.
Strategy 2: Class Dojo. Class Dojo is a great behavior management tool for the classroom used to communicate with parents on the progress of their students. This tool can be used inconjunction with the help of the parents to help improve the behavior of the students. It can also serve to help meet the needs of the student.
Strategy 3: Behavior Specialist Referral Form. When the teacher, parents, and school has exhausted all their resources the student may need to be connected with professional for his behavior management. There may be a lingering issue that the schoool/parent may be unaware about.
Provide parents with a detail information on what is going on with the student in the classroom. Discuss issue with parents calmly and with understanding of looking for solutions that would benefit the student. Explain to parents what things you have already tried to do to solve the behavior issues. Do not look to blame anyone.
It is important that the student does not feel embarressed for what they are feeling. Reassure that once you have heard and spoke with the student about their behavior, it is important to let them know that you understand and hear them.
Show and model methods they can use when they feel overwhelmed. It is important to speak to the student in a calm manner. Examples, count to 10, Write in a journal, Scribble, Color.
Speak with student concerning their behavior and provide positive feedback on the things that they do well. Set up a reward system with the student on ways they will be rewarded when they make good choices and stay on task,
Having breaks for the student may allow the student to cool down and give them time to reset. Set a few structured and time breaks throughtout the day in order for the student to not get overwhelmed. Also provide cards and verbal and visual cues when the student may need a break outiside of the normal break time.
Provide a daily behavior form until the student's behavior is no longer a constant issue. Make sure the behavior expectations are clear and they know the things that they are to do daily. Share with the students and their parents how they did for the day. If there are any improvement needs discuss with the students ways they can improve their behavior.
Meet with student individual and discuss ways that the teacher and student could communicate. The non-verbal communication will be used when a beavioral issue is identified and the student when know how to self-correct their behavior. Cues example: smile, shaking head, raising eyebrows.
This meeting can be informal or formal. Make sure their are clear guidleines and age appropriate for the student. Use a calm tone with student. Start off with the things that the student do well.
Create a game that includes the entire class. Divide the class in teams. Make sure the class what is expected of them. This could help the student who is struggling with their feelings be held accountable because their feelings can affect his teammates. The student also has peers to model correct behavior throughout class.
