Levels of Organization
Chemicals
Atoms- the simplest level
Molecule- when two or more items comprise
Macromolecules- large, biologically important molecules inside cells
Organelles- aggregates of macromolecules used to carry out a specific function in the cell
Cells- the basic unit of structures and function for living things
Tissues- group of cells functioning together
Organ- group of tissues
Organ Systems- groups of organs functioning together
Organism- organ systems functioning together
Body Systems
Skeletal System
supports the body
Muscular System
helps maintain body temperature
Cardiovascular System
deliverers oxygen and nutrients to the tissues
Integumentary System
encloses internal body structures
Nervous System
detects and processes body sensory information
Endocrine System
produces and discharges hormones
Digestive System
breaks up food and ubsorbs nutrients
Respiratory System
takes in oxygen and releases waste gases
Circulatory System
supplies tissues, transports hormones, removes waste products
Lymphatic System
vessels where lymph drains from the tissues to the blood
Urinary System
eliminates waste form the body
Female Reproductive System
internal and external sex organs that function in reproduction to offspring
Feedback Loops
Positive Feedback Loop
Temporarily amplifies the change that is occurring until something stops it (less common)
Negative Feedback Loop
Oppose a change in a controlled condition (more common)
