Democritus
He lived BCE-460, BCE-370 In Abdera, Thrace.
His discovery was that atoms had shape, mass, were indivisible but had no other qualities.
He thought all change was explained by the transfer of momentum when particles collide. His belief they wire unchanging related back to his life beliefs. He believed in parmenides, who denied all change.
He believed in no gods and it was people that determined their actions, He is known as the laughing philosopher.
Ernest Rutherford
-
. He discovered the atom was mostly empty space. He also discovered that the electrons circle at a great distance. He also discovered the proton
His most famous experiment was the gold foil experiment. In this experiment he shined a beam full of alpha particles at a piece of gold foil. Most particles went through but some were scattered back. This showed the atom was full of empty space.

Erwin Shrodinger
-
His equation the schrodinger equation could be used to calculate the energy levels of hydrogen atoms in Neil Bohr‘s atomic model. For his experiment he combined equations for behavior of waves to calculate the probability of electrons being in certain spots.

James Chadwick
-
He did the first nuclear transformation in 1919. He accomplished this by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles with the emission of a proton. Most importantly he proved the existence of neutrons. He used alpha rays and elementary particles with repelled each other showing him their were neutrons.
He was married and had twin daughters, he was knighted and received the Copley medal.
Neil Bohr
-
Worked on the structure of an atom. He would use a liquid drop and it would give a very good view of the nucleus. He researched the the atomic nuclei and the transmutations and disintegrations.
He escaped from Denmark in world war 2 and got involved in the atomic energy project. He was president of the royal danish academy of science
JJ Thomson
-
He studied cathode rays. He determined all matter is made up of tiny particles much smaller than The atom. He originally called them corpuscles but are now electrons. He determined this by using magnets and knowing the charge of the ray. Knowing the same charge repels he was able to conclude some particle was making the atoms negatively charged.
-
John Dalton
-
He made discoveries in atomic theory. He made a law named dalton‘s law.
This law is used to determine the masses of elements in compounds. His experiments were ones that involved gasses and he based his discoveries of these.
