HOW DO WE LEARN
NEW WORDS
?
What Does it Mean to Know a Word?
CHECK:
📍
Meaning
.
(it's better to check English definition first and understand it, only later you can check the English-Russian dictionary)
📍
Spelling
(Once you understand the meaning of the new word, it is helpful to attach it to the correct spelling. Knowing the correct spelling will help you recognize the target word as you later encounter it in reading.)
📍
Pronunciation
;
(It will help you recognize it later when someone uses it in a conversation. Many English words are pronounced differently from the way they are spelled.)
📍
Part of Speech

Parts of speech are an important component of word knowledge, as they help organize the words in word families.
📍
Word-family relations
Most words in the English language belong to word families — groups of words with a shared base but different suffixes and prefixes.
You can think of the words belonging to the same word family as brothers and sisters!

The 6 Best Techniques for Learning Vocabulary
№ 1. LEXICAL APPROACH.
It's better to learn vocabulary in context and collocations or chunks, than learning isolated word without context.
You can find collocations in next dictionaries:
1) Longman
2) Cambridge Dictionary
3) Ozdic
4) Youglish
In this case, you learn a new word by seeing how it is used in a sentence.
✨ Example is taken from Harry Potter
"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley [...] were proud to say that they were perfectly normal".
Word
proud
- гордый.
If we check Longman Dictionary we find next examples for "proud".
📍
very/really proud
Your family must be very proud of you.
📍
a proud mother/father/parent
Mark is the proud father of a three-week-old baby boy.
🐰🥕 HOMEWORK №1
1️⃣ Take 7-10 words;
2️⃣ Find 2-3 collocations with them (using websites where you can find collocations);
3️⃣ Write 10 sentences using these collocations in your Blue Document or in your notebook;
☝️
EXAMPLE
4️⃣ Send your homework.
№ 2 FLASHCARDS.
Why Flashcards Work?
🤔 Flashcards help you engage in active recall.
🧠 By learning something in this way, stronger neuron connections form in your brain because it is more difficult for your brain, making it more likely to remember the information in the future.
How to Make Flashcards That Work?
There are two types of information you can include:
Essential and Bonus
1️⃣ Essential – pieces of information which make the card really useful.
🔸Target word – the word which you want to learn
🔸Type of word – is it a noun, adjective, verb, etc?
🔸Word family – does the word have other forms?
For example, you could have ‘analyse’ (v) as your key word, and ‘analysis’ (n) as part of the word family.
🔸 Collocations – For example, with ‘happy’ we can have ‘happy ending’
2️⃣ Bonus – these are extra bits of information which can take your flashcard to the next level:
🔸Pronunciation;
🔸Translation;
🔸Image;
🔸Examples – examples of the word in a sentence.
All you need to do is choose which of this information you want to include on your flashcard!

№ 3 VOICING
🗣 Why Voicing Work?
Another one way of variegating your vocabulary learning routine is voicing.
Works perfectly for an auditory type of learners.
Strategy
1️⃣ Take al list of words ( topica list or words from our lessons / movies / youtube video or articles)
2️⃣ Turn on
recording app
/ dictaphone
3️⃣ Start voicing the list, but don't simply read it - stop at the vocabulary units that pose a challenge for you and say their meanings.
4️⃣ Alternatively (and that would be much more effective, of course), you can read out your example sentences with the new words.
5️⃣ Listen to the recording at home/work/uni
🦕 HOMEWORK №3

4️⃣ Send your recording.
№4 STORYTELLING
