-
Hegemonic Marxists believe that the media is owned by professionals who produce media designed to appeal to the masses and to offed as few people as possible. The motive of these professionals is to make profit rather than to make political or ideological points although hegemonic Marxists points out that this benefits the powerful.

This group also have a positive look at new media. but this group looks at the fact if consumers don't get what they want, the business fails because it isn't providing what customers want and therefore are not making money.

Consumer choice - The convergence and interactivity of new media have increased consumers choice. People can now chose from a number of media systems, like Netflix. Now people can chose to buy things online thanks to Amazon and eBay.
However lower class people can't afford to use devices that have the internet and therefore they don't have choice because they have a lack of resources.
Pick and mix - Thanks to globalisation we can now pix and chose our identities, meaning we can have bits fro america, bits from France and bits from all around the world.
However Marxists say that globalisation is amercanisation because most of what we consume is from america, so we actually don't get to pick and chose, we just get things from america and this supports the upper class because they are brainwashing people into getting this stuff
Democracy - New media brings in public opinion, because people are now allowed to create social protests and sign petitions. so everyone gets an equal say.
However Marxists say the upper class own the media and they like to spread things only the support, this way everyone agrees with the upper class and this reduces any chance of protests happening
Global village - Thanks to new media we are all interconnected, meaning we can get to know people we wouldn't normally know face to face and this means we can build relationships and friendships
However Marxists say we don't know who we are friends with and the people that we are talking to online could be lying about their identities and this creates fake relationships and this makes the media unsafe and not supportive.
Knowledge - The internet has a lot of information that people can use to gain knowledge and people can access the knowledge because some people believe knowledge is power.
However there are multiple websites with different opinions and views and so there is no right answer and as a result of this, people can form their own opinions.
Postmodernists look at the positive side of new media and the positive affects it has on society. postmodernists also look at the ownership of the media.
