Special Education Process at SLAS (Polina) education_header-750x500…

      - Teacher takes daily notes and documents behaviors and strategies that she/he has been using, and collects student work if neccessary
        
        Teacher contacts the parents or guardians and schedules a meeting
        
        During the meeting the following topics are discussed:
        
        Has this particular behavior been seen before?
        
        Has this behavior been seen at home and what parents do in this situation?
        
        Are there any other things that they are concerned about?
        
        Teacher documents the meeting. Both parents/guardians and the teacher agree on using the same strategies at home and school for the next 2-3 weeks.
        
        Teacher constantly communicates with the parents and documents the outcomes.
        
        By the end of the agreed period parents and the teacher hold another meeting to evaluate the progress

- - - - After multiple observations and evaluation from SST, the official meeting with classroom teacher, parents/guardians, head of SST, and instructors is scheduled.
        
        The areas of concern are identified by SST and alternative interventions and strategies are suggested for the next 3-week period.
        
        SST instructors monitor the student within the agreed timeframe. Both teacher and SST document strategies that worked/worked for a while/didn't work. During this time communication with parents is essential. SST instructor, teacher, and the parents create a group chat (Wechat) and communicate on a daily basis.
        
        By the end of the 3 week period another meeting is schedules to evaluate the progress.
        
        Student makes progress with the new strategies
        
        Student does not improve. Alternative strategies did not work
        
        SST, parents and the teacher move to step 3 - Referral for Special Education Evaluation

        Student will be referred to one of the two organizations mentioned above. School will wait for the final evaluation.
        
        Olivia's Place or ELG will assess the student on following:
        
        Educational Dyslexia Assessment
        
        Cognitive Testing
        
        Developmental Testing
        
        Achievement (Academic) Testing
        
        Attention and Memory Testing
        
        Behavioral and Emotional Testing
        
        Autism Spectrum Assessments
        
        Auditory and Visual Processing Assessments
        
        Functional Behavior Analysis
        
        Evaluators might come to school to observe the student in everyday environment if they need more data.
        
        The final evaluation is done and the report goes back to school

        SLAS cannot make parent/guardians do the evaluation. If they refuse, student will be provided as much support as possible at school. However, if the student's trimester grades are failing without any Special Education evaluation. Student might be expelled for poor performance.
