Alliances, armaments and Origins of the First World War
Fixed military alliances formed in peacetime: Germany and Austria-Hungary (1879), Franco Russian alliance (1894), Britain has been locked into the bipolar competition.
Arms races are also involved, Conscription levels were raised in Germany in 1893 and 1913, also France changed from 2 to 3 years of mandatory military service. The Ottoman and AustroHungarian empires were subject to disintegrative pressures, and their conflicts were linked to colonial powers:
