Girl Asleep, by Matthew Whittet

Lighting (Richard Vabre)
-
Lighting was used to create setting/location: Ice Queen was blue/purple; Swamp was green; party was colour chase behind the door; music box lit up too!
Monologues and narration was captured via spotlight; other specials highlighted key people/object/set
Decals or gobos were used to create patterns that set the location, in contrast to the wallpaper
Set (Jonathon Oxlade)
Setting was a 70s home: wallpaper; record player; colour scheme was bright, maroon, etc
Set was easily manipulated to change location; curtains used to hide scene changes e.g. bedroom. Many set pieces moved in and out of the main stage. Door, stair, window panels were able to be changed to suit the dream.

Acting
Elliot (Jelk): nervous hand movements; tense and locked body; used a lisp; high-pitched voice. Often didn't maintain eye contact. Talked too much! Often sounded happy
Sergei (Jelk): opposite of Elliot; slow walk, open and broad shouldered stance. Sensual, hips moving, arms flowing. French accent and deep voice.
Twins: moved in unison with exaggerated leg movements to make them seem high and mighty, prowling, etc. Umba communicated only through body language whereas Jade spoke with a aloof caricature of a posh accent.
Genevieve (Harbridge): loud, opinionated, comes across angry and rebellious. Movements were weighted. Voice was deep and powerful.
Eagle Gen (Harbridge): fiery, erratic movements; slashing through the air. Open-chested posture with overly loud proclamations
Actors played multiple characters and changed their bodies and voices to show this, e.g. dance party scene
Themes
Coming of Age
Scenes include: introduction of Dad's jokes and then her rejection of them at the end of the play; Bedroom becomes more 'teenaged' as the play progresses

-
Family
Sister: rebellious, aggressive, strong / Father: funny, cringeworthy / Mother: oblivious, fairyland, projecting onto daughters. BOTH PARENTS WANTED GRETA TO STAY A CHILD
Love
When Eilliot kissed Greta, she was grossed out. Grew to realise her feelings for Elliot. The family loves each other in their own way; parents love the child version of Greta. Sisterly love between Greta and Gen
Friendship
Greta can't make friends well and moved to new school; introverted and quiet and Elliot is the opposite. Physically closer throughout the play

Genre and Style
Genre: Magical Realism: a genre of performance that is mostly realistic, but allows for journeys into fantastical worlds or dreamscapes. "The fantastical and supernatural exist in a realistic setting and are accepted by other characters as normal."
Acing Style: Heightened Realism, a form of realism that elevates itself out of the mundane to allow for a more dramatically intense series of events.
Costume, Hair and Makeup (Jonathon Oxlade)
Fast costume changes made the audience feel like there were many people despite there being only 6 actors
Gen had short hair that made her look more rebellious. Phoenix, eagle, powerful
70s; flare jeans; bright colours; short shorts; high socks; highly styled hair. Mustaches, etc
Greta: consistent costume that didn't change too much in the play. She gets dressed up in 'pretty pink' compared to her sister. Other Greta wore all white, hero, etc
The Hunter twins wore the same thing, moved in the same way, made them appear part of the group. Dog SFX
Dad: the costume made him appear comical, e.g. towel in first scene; shown as a goblin. Mum was stylish but still a homemaker; pantsuit. Ice Queen
Crone was masked and frightening, combined with sound
