Groupings
Top Scoring
The top scoring group will be allowed to borrow a camera from the classroom and take photos around the school. Their goal is to practice adjusting their depth of field to create different compositions of the same subject while maintaining proper exposure.
Middle Scoring
The middle scoring group will together review the questions on the quiz and correct their errors. They will then share a camera in the classroom to demonstrate they can change the settings and that they understand the impact that will have on their photos. As a group they will demonstrate photos of 5 different subjects with different compositions.
Bottom Scoring
The low scoring group will meet with me. Each student will sit with me to demonstrate that they can change the settings and they can demonstrate how and why they would choose particular settings for different compositions.
The three students who struggled with the quiz may demonstrate their skills to me and if they show that the gap in the understanding was the quiz and not the ability they may join one of the other groups. If they do not have the ability to use the camera I will help and encourage them to find YouTube videos in their own language to help understand the concepts behind composition and then have them demonstrate their understanding with me.
The two students who did poorly on the test and who are being tested for learning disabilities will also show me if their understanding was the quiz or the concept. If it was the quiz they can move into the other groups. If they are still struggling with the manual camera settings I will have them use the partially manual settings, like shutter or aperture priority with auto ISO so they can focus on reviewing one setting at a time.
Ongoing Assessments
After the pretest and differentiated assignments the students will present their photos (of one subject) to the class. They will include their metadata so they can clearly present how the settings created the photo.
-
The bottom group will present their own work which they did with me (or on their own if they had moved to another group.) The students who are using priority settings are only required to present on how they changed one or two settings instead of all three.
The middle group will present their 5 subjects. Each member will present 1 subject with multiple photos.
These presentations (and follow up comments and questions from myself and the class) offers me an opportunity to assess what areas they need to work on and offer valuable feedback to the students.
