CAUSES
The initial aim of achieving an independent Kurdish state, later changing it to a demand for equal rights and Kurdish autonomy in Turkey
Initial reasons: the oppression of Kurds in Turkey( use of Kurdish language, dress, folklore and names were banned in Kurdish-inhabited areas) and Capitalism
Secessionist region --> PKK are attacking the forces of the government/ military meaning it is an intrastate armed conflict but as they also target civilians it is terrorism.
Alternative government: has a legitimate claim or thinks they have a legitimate claim to become government, can also be seen as a secessionist groups
Secession: if they are attacking forces of the government/ military then it is intrastate armed conflict, however, if they attack civilians then it is terrorism

Counter Terrorism
Finding the way to a settlement is hard, as terrorist attacks continue and the PKK mounts increasingly length offensives.
Turkish forces have been fighting against the PKK as NATO and the US are hesitant to get involved and support either side.
Some on both sides are talking again of winning militarily and seem to have accepted many hundreds of dead each year as the cost, despite increasing public opinion that military action alone will not solve their mutual problem
