Differentiation
Subject: English Conversation (Year 1, Age 15-16)
Topic: Lesson 4: “Going Shopping”
Pre-Assessment
Students must draw an interaction between clerk and customer. They are free to choose any point in the interaction (e.g. searching for an item, paying for an item) but should include at least two speech bubbles. Students will have ten minutes to draw.
-
While I sort their assessments, students will watch a sample shopping video:video.
Assessments will be sorted into three piles:
(1) Illustrated a coherent interaction with no mistakes,
(2) Created an understandable illustration with some mistakes (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, only one speech bubble), and
(3) Illustration was difficult to understand and/or the student could not create English dialogue
Groupings
(Group 1) Illustrated a coherent interaction with no mistakes,
”Enrichment Station”
Create an animated shopping “movie” using Powtoon or their software of choice (can also be split into two movies)
Use dictionaries to promote ownership of their own learning and seek out more advanced expressions and situations.
(Group 2) Created an understandable illustration with some mistakes (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, only one speech bubble)
”Development Station”
Work on Quizlet quizzes to practice shopping vocabulary and expressions
-
(Group 3) Illustration was difficult to understand and/or the student could not create English dialogue

Ongoing Assessments
Station Assessments
By their nature, each station is its own assessment and provides insight into the students’ progress.
For example, the Quizlet quizzes will show me the terms and expressions that are “most missed” by the students, and the animated film will demonstrate how much students were able to enrich themselves.
Final Activity
I hope to culminate the lesson with a shopping activity in which all students create vendor stalls and complete missions that synthesize everything they have learned (e.g “You only have $5 and you need to buy a blue size M T-shirt”).
