INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION
Definition
Blockage of the intestines that keeps food and liquids from passing through the small intestine or colon.

Pathophysiology
Small intestine secretes 6 to 8 litres of fluid rich in electrolytes, this fluid sometimes does not reach the caecum.
When an obstruction occurs, an imbalance occurs, an imbalance between secretion and absorption develops. Fluids, gas and contents accumulate above the obstruvtion
This causes abdominal distension which results in the reduction of fluid absorbed and increase in intestinal secretion.
The capillaries become easily permeable and bowel organisms enter the peritoneal cavity. Causing pain and discomfort.
