JAUNDICE
DEFINITION
A yellowish discolouration of mucous membrane, skin and sclera causing increased circulation of conjugated bilirubin
TYPES
Haemolytic Jaundice
Results from excessive destruction of red blood cells, causing increase of bilirubin in the blood
Obstructive Jaundice
Occurs when the bile is prevented from reaching the duodenum owing to obstruction by a gall stone which is the stricture of common bile duct

Honey, orange peels, pineapple
Soluble fibre food eg legumes, nuts

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
If this process is hindered, excess conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin pass into the bloodstream
This is deposited into the skin, mucous membrane, sclerae etc

Assess for colour of the skin, sclera, mucous membranes every 8 hours
