definition
is condition in which stomach herniates through the oesophageal openings of the diaphragm that has become weak and or enlarged , into the lower end of the thoracic cavity .
Pathophysiology
the muscles encircle the oesophageal junction and thus the stomach is prevented from ascending into the thoracic cavity.
Part of the stomach herniates upward into the mediastinal cavity caused by trauma or loss of muscle tone .
The reflux may cause oesopjagitis or ulceration .
