LEIOMYOMAS (UTERINE FIFROIDS)
DEFINITION
These are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years.
CAUSES
Genetic changes
Hormones- estrogen and progesterone
Other growth factors – substances that help the body maintain tissues
ASSESSMENT AND COMMON FINDINGS
A history of irregular heavy menstrual flow
Dysmenorrhea
Bloating in the stomach
Lower back pain
Constipation
Urinary frequency and urgency
A vaginal discharge

RISK FACTORS
Race- black women are more likely to have fibroids than other women racial group
Early menstruation
Diet higher in red meat, lower green vegetables and fruits
Alcohol consumption
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
Myomectomy – abdominal surgical procedure to remove the fibroids
Hysterectomy – the removal of the uterus

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Fibroids begin as single or multiple seedlings in the myometrium and grow gradually over a long period.
