Antidiarrheal
Are drugs that used to stop prolonged diarrhea
Laxatives
Are drugs that relieves constipation
Precautions
bowel may dry out due to laxative-induced diarrhoea
laxative may cause dependency
bowel may become inactive
Prolonged use of laxatives may cause bowel muscle tone to be loose
long term use may cause damage to the bowel
Contraindications
liver failure
infectious diarrhoea and tachycardia
paralysis of the intestines
passage of bloody stool
abnormal ECG with QT wave changes from birth
Side effects
vomiting and constipation
fatigue
dry mouth
stomach pain, discomfort or enlargement
dizziness and drowsiness
types of laxatives
stool softener
mix fluids into stool to soften them making them easier to pass
osmotic laxatives
Cause intestines to hold more fluids which softens the stool
lubricant laxatives
Coats the surface of the stool to make it more slippery .
bulk-forming laxative
Add soluble fibre to stool
stimulant laxatives
Causes bowel to squeeze or contract to move stool out

medication used to decrease the frequency of diarrhoea

Antacid medication used to treat temporary discomfort of the stomach and GI tract
