Tier Two
Strategy two: Teaching coping Skills
Teaching coping skills can help the students managing their emotions. Coping skills should be modeled regularly for the whole class throughout the year. If the child continues to have trouble regulating and appropriately expressing his/her emotions, having children break into small groups for lesson(on coping skills) can be beneficial. The teacher may also want to pair the student with a classmate that exhibits high relationship skills.
Strategy three: The Praise Game
The praise is an important part of students learning appropriate behavior. One way for the teacher to incorporate this into the classroom routine is by playing the praise game. The whole class is apart of this and broken into teams. The teacher sets a timer and if during this time all classroom expectations were met by the team they receive points. This game is great because it promotes high expectations and peer accountability.
Strategy one: Behavior Contract
If the student moves to tier two it is important to still hold them accountable for their actions. Creating a contract can promote self regulation and responsibility. The student and teacher will decide what kind of contract and clearly state which behaviors need to be improved. To be most effective, the form should be used daily. At the end of the day the teacher should discus behavior and send result home with students to discuss with parents.
Tier Three
Strategy two:Forced Choice Reinforcement Survey
The forced choice survey supports the students individual BIP. If the student continues to not respond to rewards or incentives this quick survey lets the teacher review the students feedback from the students perspective. This survey is also designed to help the teacher understand what motivates the student and develop a rewards system to help motivate student on appropriate behavior.
Strategy three:Mentoring
To increase students motivation and morale a great resource can be a mentor. The mentor can reenforce appropriate behavior while also extending the child's support. when a child continues to be disruptive and "unsuccessful academically" having a mentor can help them feel someone is on "their side". If a mentor is used, it is important that it is the same mentor to create consistency and build the mentor/student relationship.
Strategy one:Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
Moving into tier three it is important to include external support and resources. This includes support staff, administration, and parents. the BIP is designed to provide the student with a plan for success that is made specifically for their needs. Having a plan in place will help with addressing issues consistency and help the teacher to track and gather data on the behavior.
Tier one
Strategy two: Redirection
First remind student of appropriate classroom behavior and expectations. When redirecting student it is important to be clear and to the point. The teacher may also want to create some non-verbal redirections strategies with the student. Some may be eye contact or placing hand on the child's desk. Whichever the strategy, it is important to be consistent.
Strategy three: Teach relationship skills
Redirection and close proximity can help the student stay on task and know when behavior is inappropriate through the teacher. By teaching relationship skills the teacher is able to help the student build skills that will help there be less incidents of conflict and disruption. These skills can help the student understand appropriate language, decrease conflict with peers, and how to cope with strong emotions. In tier one the the teacher can gear lesson on relationships for the whole class. the teacher should model and role-play relationship skills when the opportunity arrises.
Strategy one: Proximity to Student
During instructions and activities increase proximity to student. When the student starts showing signs of disinterest or disruptive behavior, naturally move closer to the student. This action lets the student know that you are aware of them and can be a "subtle redirection technique".
