Macbeth
Themes
Murder: it is the tone setting theme of Macbeth, the murderous nature of humans for power and the plot is revolved around murdering others to stay in power.
Chain of being: Macbeth has a hidden desire of climbing the chain of being, even though he suppresses it, he is still manipulated by it.
The distortion of the chain of being in act 2 has occurred in Macbeth's vision because Macbeth commits the murder of a monarch which is considered the worst crime against the chain of being The audience at the time believed it to be true.
In Shakespeare's eyes, the chain of being is considered fair, because god decides the king and it is the only thing that sets apart human world and the wilderness: the god chosen birth right instead of the physically powerful taking over the society.
Reason and desire: Macbeth suppress the murderous thought with reason, but the impulsive desire just kept him lure into thinking about it further and further.
Presence of evil: the witches are thought to be real in the olden times, and this presence of evil is not only the witches further poisoning Macbeth's thoughts, but also the original desire that Macbeth has to break the taboos
Psychology: Shakespeare's understanding for human psychology was much ahead of its time. There is an accurate depiction of Macbeth hallucinating out of stress and anxiety.
-
The point of no return: Macbeth has committed all the crimes to get to the place he has right now, there is no point in going back. Because it takes just as much blood to go forward than back.
Hand washing: blood/evidence can be washed from hands, but never from mind. (Tainting the whole ocean)
