Differenttiated Instruction Based on Pre-Assessment

Pre-Assessment

Description of Unit: Students will learn about the water cycle, as well as how pollution in the environment can affect the various stages. This will be a nine week unit, with roughly one or two lessons per week directly tied to these concepts. Lessons like writing, reading, and math will follow the general theme as well.

Break students into groups

Group 2 (Students who show some knowledge of the water cycle but need further instruction)

Group 3(Students who show limited knowledge of the water cycle as reflected by the pre-assessment)

Group 1 (5 students who got perfect scores on the pre-assessment)

Students will be sent in pairs to their desks to complete the "Living in a Freshwater World" lesson developed by NASA. There are readings, videos, and interactive lessons. Students would be allowed to choose the sections that they did, and then would present their findings to the class.

These students will use the tablet computers to watch a short Youtube video on the water cycle. They will then create a water cycle in a bag, labeling all of the parts correctly. Finally, they will present what they have learned to each other and the class.

Students in the 3rd group will receive direct instruction from the teacher. We will go through a water cycle powerpoint, talking about the cycle and the vocabulary words. This will be especially helpful for the ELL students and special needs students as they will be able to go at a slower pace, and can ask any questions that they have. They will then complete a worksheet that demonstrates their findings. This whole group's activities are very visual, to aid the students who have trouble reading. They will present this to the class as a group or individually, depending on their personalities.
