What are the research frontiers of Design Thinking and how should UNSW contribute to them?

Need to keep design near the everyday, art can move it into an unrealistic realm. Freedom to explore anything can quickly lead to irrelevance to the day to day.
Design creates something to be used, not just seen and reflected upon like art
Use industrial techniques and processes or add technical complexity in other ways.

What is Engineering Design
thoughtful process for generating designs for devices, systems or processes that attain given objectives while adhering to specified constraints
Ideas
Engineering lacks an earnest appreciation for aesthetic and a human centered approach. Not always needed for detailed engineering design, such as aeroplane fuel tank or components on a motherboard.
- Design is open ended, lots of acceptable solutions
- Design is ill structured, cannot simply apply structured methods or equations. Limited information and unclear goals
- Design provides a framework to apply engineering skills... or engineers solve technical problems of designs
Client-User-Engineer: Interests of the three can diverge and consequences can arise from failure to meet user needs.

Teamwork and communication
Rarely get opportunity to work with non-engineering students, but will often work within non-engineering teams.

Programs many different names and disciplines, problems require cross disciplinary solutions and collaborative problems solving
User-centered design
Design has expanded its scope dramatically over the last 20 years to interaction, services and even policy? Where are the limits of this expansion?
Move from product and interaction to services and interactions... where's the limit?
It lies on the boundary of it's foreseeable usefulness and feasibility. Hypothetically it could be applied to anything, but weather this is useful or feasible is the better questions.
Design research seeks to explicate meanings for design, not to create explanations.
- People give meanings to things and act on these meanings and these meanings arise from and area modified by these interactions.
- Design comes by its meaning in real life so should be done in real life.
- Should be visual, tactile, inspiration-enhancing, deliberately cheap and low tech, playful, tested in reality and targeted at the fuzzy front end of the design process
