A collection of characters are introduced in the first act of Macbeth. First, readers meet the three witches, whose prophecies will prove to be influential in the story. Then readers meet Duncan, the King of Scotland, and his son, Malcom, along with a few other minor characters of war. Lennox, Ross, and Angus are all introduced in the first act as Scottish noblemen. Banquo and Macbeth are then introduced in a meeting with the witches. Banquo is inquisitive and with a steady mind, balancing out the worried attitude of Macbeth. Macbeth and Banquo command Duncan’s army together, and Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis (and later, of Cawdor). Lastly, Lady Macbeth is introduced, an ambitious and strong-willed character willing to do almost anything to get her way.
