VULVITIS
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS

NURSING MANAGEMENT
- application of low dosage steroid ointment where prescribed
- perform sitz bath with 1:30 dilution of savlon at least twice a day

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
- it is therefore prone to irritants
- irritants break the continuity of the skin
- where hygiene is poor, comes into contact with faecal matter
- infective organisms such as E.coli cause infection

- skin scrapings in cases of dermatitis
- routine urinalysis, including MCS

DEFINITION
- An infection and inflammation of the vulva which is secondary to conditions such as diabetes mellitus and vaginitis.

HEALTH EDUCATION
- advise patient to wear absorbent cotton underwear
- advise patient to drink plenty of water to dilute urine and reduce irritation
- emphasize the importance of wiping from front to back so that faecal matter is kept away from the vulva
- teach the patient about good personal hygiene and how to keep vulval area clean

NURSING MANAGEMENT
- administer prescribed medication
- emphasise the importance of completing the course of antibiotics.
- encourage patient to contact their sexual partner to be put on treatment for STI's
- obtain a cervical pap smear
- assist patient in self-care especially in maintaining personal hygiene.
