Legitimacy
using authority & position to stress targets to complete request in accordance to org rules/ policies

Developing emotional commitment by appealing to target's values, needs & aspirations

'Decentralisation' - involving employee decision n opinion on work related issues, increasing target's motivation & support

Using threats, warning n repeated demands

using flattery, praise n friendly behaviour before making a request

Formal Power, determined by org, given a position
Coercive Power
Power to infringe threats, punishments on targets and result in fear of negative results if one fails to comply. E.g if A can demote, dismiss n suspend B from work. or A can assign B work activities that B find unpleasant or A treats B in a manner B finds embarrassing
Reward Power
the person having the ability n resources to reward others. Target must value the rewards such as pay rise, promotion, praise n etc. THE REWARD MUST BE WAT THE TARGET VALUES SO THAT this power exist

Personal Power, Comes from an individual's unique characteristics, may or may not have formal power
Expert Power
The power to have specialised knowledge n skills n expertise on certain areas. The target must find the power holder credible, trustworthy n relevant. The person must have tangible evidence of this knowledge
Referent Power
Arises out of admiration and the desire to be like the person. Managers with referent power are attractive to subordinates and they wish to identify with him or her.

refers to the capacity A has to influence the behaviour of B so that B will act in accordance to A's wishes.

involves normal everyday politics like complaining to boss, bypassing the chain of command, etc
