Risk Factors
- Harder the kid is to care for
- Shittier the parent's circumstance
Child
- Intellectually disabled (MR)
- Preemies :baby::skin-tone-2:
- Disabilities (physical or cognitive) :wheelchair:
Adult
- single parent :forbidden::ring:
- young parent :girl::skin-tone-4: (teen preg)
- Poor people
- non-biologic parents
#1 risk factor: those who have been abused

Doc's Responsibility
Report
- Child protective services
- Family (the abuser)
- explain why you're snitching (its mandatory)
- don't need 100% certainty
- try to maintain family cohesion: why actions are taken (Patient safety)
Patient Safety
- Notifying
- Separating abuser from child
- what should be attempted
- this includes sep child-parent unit from common abuser :man::skin-tone-2:
- Hospitalization (Last Resort)
- when no safe alternative exists
Help family Cope
- Abuser typically doesn't know how to cope w/ caretaking
- not intentionally malicious (usually)
- helping cope might alleviate stress
Goal isn't to pull families apart
- Identify, report, keep kid safe
- Kids don't understand boundaries, and can just hurt themselves
- Not all abuse is obvious. Injured child should raise clinical suspicion
