Identify students at risk
Are they involved in conversations?
Are they answering questions in depth?
Are the students engaged?
Are they showing up at class?
Do they rely on a classmate for an answer?
Are they showing up prepared?
First Line Solutions (teacher level)
Give support and more attention to the struggling student
Work as a group with other teachers. Bring your concerns of support to other teachers of that student.
Cover the basics, but don’t require the struggling student to answer as in-depth as other students.
Contact parents and see if they are able to help support the struggling student e.g. see that the student does 15 minutes a night on an area where the student struggles
Second Line Solutions (teacher and in-school team)
Contact special edcuation teacher to ask for advice
Have an in-school meeting that moves the student toward being identified as a student with special needs. Attending this type of meeting should be the student's teacher, a member of the administration, a special education teacher and/or counsellor and/or student success teacher
Support the IEP (teacher, special education teacher, administration)
Teachers execute the IEP
Administration monitors to see that the IEP is being followed
Make sure all supports for the IEP are in place
Teacher meets three times a year with the special education teacher to assess the IEP and adjust it as is necessary
Third Line Solutions (teacher, in-school team, psychometrist)
Have a second in-school meeting that moves the student toward the development of an IEP. Attending this type of meeting should be the student's teacher, a member of the administration, a special education teacher, a counsellor, a student success teacher, and a psychometrist
create a plan (IEP) for the student
Meet with the parents and the student . Discuss the IEP.
Student gets tested by a psychometrist
(this step may or may not occur) The school may want to skip a second team meeting and the special education teacher sends a form home to the parents requesting psychometrist testing
