vaginitis
Description
is an inflammation of the vagina that can results in discharge, itching and pain
Pathophysiology
the overgrowth of normally present bacteria, infecting bacteria, or viruses can cause symptoms of vaginitis
chemical irritation also can be significant factor
atrophic vaginitis is associated with hypoestrogenism
Causes
bacterial vaginosis
yeast infections
trichomoniasis
assessment and common findings
change in colour, odour, or amount of discharge from vagina
vaginal itching, or irritation
pain during intercourse
painful urination, light vaginal bleeding or spotting
Diagnostic test
pelvic exam
vaginal swab
Nursing management
administration of prescribed flagyl 400mg 12 hourly for seven days, and administration of plenty of fluids
controlling pain related to genital lesions, and reducing itching and maintaining the vulva area clean and dry
reduce the risk of spread of infection

good personal hygiene
drink plenty of water
wiping from front to back
Cervicitis
Description
infection and inflammation of the cervix caused by a variety of organisms
Pathophysiology
under the influence if oestrogen, the normal vaginal epithelium cornifies
making it somewhat resistant to infections agents
the endocervix is lined by columnar epithelium which is susceptible to infectious agents leading to cervicitis
Causes
sexually transmitted infections
allergic reactions
bacterial overgrowth
signs and symptoms
pain during intercourse and vaginal bleeding after
large amount of unusual vaginal discharge
frequent, painful urination
bleeding between menstrual periods
cervix will be red and oedematous
diagnostic tests
cervical swab
pap smear
Nursing management
cervical pap smear done and results analysed
sexual partner must be contacted and put on treatment
prescribed medication must be administered and antibiotic cycle completed
Essential health information
daily baths and cleansing of the genital whenever necessary
keeping underwear clean and dry
after defecation, to wipe from front backwards so that vulva is not contaminated with faecal matter
