In gastro-oesophageal reflux associated with an incompetent lower oesophageal sphincter
Contributory factors include impared gastric emptying from gastroparesis
Inflammation, ulceration and mucosal damage of the oesophagus
The acidic gastric content flow backwards through weak cardiac sphincter into oesophagus
