Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS)
The Disrespecters
SCENARIO
: You have a middle school student who is lack of common courtesy. He always feels he is right and never listens to his teachers' ideas and advice. He has negative facial expressions and likes rolling eyes at teachers. Today he almost got into a fight with his classmate.

Tier 2 aims at solving specific problems if the student doesn't response to Tier 1 strategies. It's supposed to let the student realize his thoughts and concerns are valued and he needs to be responsible for his behaviors. School counselor's intervention and relaxation skills will be adopted in order to help with self emotional management when involved in confrontation.

Teach social skills
Tier 3 would be very individualized on letting the student know the consequences. The school at this stage involves parents' collaboration to teach different social skills regarding to different situations the students have issues with.

Praise when good attitude and involvement occur
This is a critical stage to figure out the concerns and the reasons behind the student's behavioral patterns. By completing reflection sheet in conjunction with the school rules and expectations, the sheets can be used to help correct undesired behaviors or, alternatively, to reinforce the student following the rules and exhibiting expected and desired behaviors. When the student exhibits positive attitude, we keep acknowlegding it to provide students with the kind of positive reinforcement that builds on success, motivating the student to increases their participation in class.

SCENARIO
: You have a student who frequently asks for sick leave. She is a quick learner but she only wants to get a passing score. The student comes to school for socializing for she doesn't know what she wants to do. She falls asleep when participating group activities in class. She always asks you "Why do people come to school?"

When the student would like to come to school more often but still lacks of motivation participating in groups, peer tutoring provides close instructions to get the student's attention. Structured breaks give her cool down time, avoiding too stressful class climate for the student. Check In Check Out is beneficial for self monitor.

Tier 3 Daily behavior form offers more one on one help, it boots self responsibility and creases her effort. The meeting keeps collaborative and constant updates between the school, parents and the student. The action involves collaborative work to help the student find out what she is doing in her school life. Reward system provides incentives and keeps high expectations of the student.

The first tier strategies make the unmotivated student have a sense of belong in the classroom by assigning errands and tasks for the student. The student doesn't seem to enjoy learning but likes socializing with her peers. A motivated and confident learning buddy helps with more consistent attendance. The teacher reinforces positive communication with the parent to make sure a timely communication with the student and parents.
