predicting a set (volleybal)
pass placement
great pass: between net and 7 foot line
right side: 3-5 poss attacks: front + back
middle: 3-4, but bit harder for outside and mid
left side: 2-3: right side bit far away
bad pass: 14+
right: 1-2: left too far away, right imposs, mid prob not (unless doing a B (is hard from back corner)
mid: 1-2: mid can't, 4 and 2 become very diff
left: 0-3: mid can't, right would be miracle
good pass: 7-13 foot line
right side: 2-3: right hard, mid bit harder (poss when setting a blue ball)
mid: 2-3: hard for mid (unless doing a blue/red or two)
left side: 1-2: can't go to left, mid hard too, right too far away, likely a big setter or pipe set
setter improvement
great pass in the middle: have middle get out instead of frozen
learn how to influence the pass of the other team
learn to set from 1 to 5 and how to decently pass such a ball
learn to set from anywhere to anywhere
setter position
feet
where are they pointed? some will point to the pin they're going to set
left right
are they leaning or balanced? balance->more power and options, leaning ->less power, low, prob middle
full left-right step to get power? probs outside
feet together and controlled? prob's less of a set: middle or quick back set
lower back
in 30-60 deg angle and pressing in->outside (left)
90, straight up-> back, up or if setter has enough power: outside
weight on left foot and press, but body is right->trying to create an arc: back
pressing with right, hips forward and or shoulders moving out of line with the head->arch in back: back
hips and shoulders
setters try to square up with the hips and shoulders,
opening to the court->prob back
hands
high: up and backwards poss
low-> middle or outside (left)
thumbs and index fingers drop?->back, flat hands: up/middle
head
watch the eyes
opponents looking at a certain hitter->that one
when serving and when setting
ball contact
further away the hands are from the body, the less power
below, outside to the left/right or too high->less power
setter improvement
square up with the net, not the pin
read the pass, get to the spot, check the block, listen for a call and assume the hitter will be there, and set
let the ball come down to the hands above the forehead and try to start in a neutral position
hitter layout
who is the best hitter? he'll get the most sets
setter improvement
set the best hitter in the situation, not the most personally qualified
get to know the opponents real quick
who is what (libero, hitter, DS, captain(!))
who is good in what
right handed? personalities (blood headed, anaconda, chaotic, loud, wasting/preserving energy) etc
look out for watches, hands used to drink, hands used
look when: conversations, point celebrations, breaks, before the match
be a good example, but don't show off->predictable
jumping and regular setting
jump:
holds the blockers
isn't technically advantageous, unless you're really really good
setter prob closer to the net -> prob gonna set the comfortable set: the VIP
set prob going to be high->block has time
generally take away from tractionof the left to right step process ->less powerful and consisten
down: ground allows traction->faster, more consistent\
setter up and down
setter up -> more prone to do crazy things
setter down->more prone to do structured plays
generally
55 % outside hitter
20 % middle
25% right side hitter
setter improvement
learn to set middles and right sides too
make hitters comfortable with setting from everywhere
practice with "bad" passes
own movements
setter usually tries to find/create a hole in the defense
