Leiomyomas
Defination
Leiomyomas are also known as myomas or fibroids.

Fibroids may remain in the muscle wall (intramural) or be found in the uterine cavity (intracavity) or on the utureus (serosal).

Risk factors
Causes of fibroids are not know, they is evidence of acceleration growth during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
Pathopyshiology
Fibroids begin as single or multiple seedlings in the myometrium and grow gradually over a long period.
They may cause presssure in the pelvis resulting in pain, urinary frequency, urgency and constipation.
The intramural fibroid may also interfere with uterine contraction resulting in abnormal bleeding during menstruation.
This could be menorrhagia, hyper- menorrhoea and metrorrhagia.

In fibroids located in the uterine cavity, the risk of infertility, placenta abruptio and premature labour are high.

Medical management
Management depends on the size,location and symptoms.

In cases where the symptoms are a threat to the women's health and therefore life threatening and the patient does not plan to have children, the uterus may be removed.
